Supreme Court Grants Interim Relief to Amit Jogi in Murder Case

Interim Relief Granted by Supreme Court

The Supreme Court of India has provided interim relief to Amit Jogi, the son of former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Ajit Jogi and a former legislator. The court has suspended his sentence and life imprisonment in connection with the murder case of NCP leader Ram Avatar Jaggi. A bench comprising Justices Vikram Nath, Sandeep Mehta, and Vijay Bishnoi issued this interim order, effectively putting his sentence on hold until the completion of the case hearing. Jogi had approached the Supreme Court challenging the Chhattisgarh High Court's decision, which had overturned his acquittal and declared him guilty, imposing a life sentence on him. Previously, the Supreme Court had issued notices to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Chhattisgarh government regarding Jogi's petition.

This case pertains to the murder of NCP leader Ram Avatar Jaggi, which occurred in 2003. In 2007, a trial court sentenced 28 accused to life imprisonment, but Amit Jogi was acquitted due to insufficient evidence. However, the High Court has now reversed that decision, convicting him and ordering him to surrender within three weeks.

Legal Proceedings and Challenges

In his petition to the Supreme Court, Jogi has also requested exemption from surrendering before the authorities within the stipulated time following his conviction. The High Court's decision to convict him came after the CBI appealed against the trial court's acquittal ruling. During the previous hearing, the court had issued notices to the CBI and the Chhattisgarh government regarding Jogi's challenge against the High Court's reversal of his acquittal.
