Supreme Court Dismisses Assam Deportation Petition Amid Rising Tensions

Supreme Court's Decision on Assam Deportation Case

The Supreme Court has declined to hear a petition that challenges the Assam government's actions of deporting individuals identified as foreigners by the state's Foreigners Tribunals back to Bangladesh. A bench comprising Justices Sanjay Karol and SC Sharma directed the petitioner to seek recourse through the Gauhati High Court.

The petition alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party-led government in Assam was unlawfully sending Indian citizens to Bangladesh under the pretext of deporting undocumented migrants.

This legal action arises amidst a notable increase in the detention of declared foreigners in Assam since May 23, with families expressing concern over the lack of information regarding their missing relatives. Some families have reportedly identified their loved ones in videos from Bangladesh, claiming they were forcibly taken across the border.

Tragic Landslide in North Sikkim

In a separate incident, a landslide at an army camp in the Chatten region of North Sikkim resulted in the deaths of three Indian Army personnel, with six others currently unaccounted for. The landslide occurred due to heavy rainfall that began around 7 PM near Lachen town in the Mangan district.

Four injured soldiers have been rescued, and search operations are ongoing for the missing personnel. Additionally, over 100 tourists stranded by landslides since May 30 have been successfully evacuated to Phidang in the Lower Dzongu area of North Sikkim.

The northeastern region has experienced significant rainfall over the past two days, with Assam's Silchar district recording 415.8 mm of rain in a 24-hour period, marking the highest single-day rainfall since 1893. In Manipur, more than 1,900 residents have been affected by flooding following four consecutive days of heavy rain, damaging approximately 3,365 homes.

Controversy Surrounding Tamil Film 'Thug Life'

The producers of the Tamil film 'Thug Life,' featuring actor and politician Kamal Haasan, have approached the Karnataka High Court for permission to screen the film in the state amid calls for its boycott. The petition from Raajkamal Films International argues that Haasan's statement regarding the Kannada language being 'born out of Tamil' was misinterpreted and made in a spirit of friendship.

The petitioners are requesting the court to prevent the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce and other entities from taking actions that would hinder or prohibit the film's release in any language throughout the state. This legal move follows a warning from the film chamber that the release of 'Thug Life' would be obstructed unless Haasan formally apologized for his comments.

Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh Leader Faces Legal Action

In another development, Karnataka police have filed charges against Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh leader Kallada Prabhakar Bhat for allegedly making provocative statements during a condolence gathering in Dakshina Kannada district. The remarks were reportedly made on May 12 in Kavalapadur village during a memorial for Bajrang Dal member Suhas Shetty, who was previously accused of murder.

Bhat's comments, made in front of an audience of around 500, have been deemed potentially harmful to communal harmony, prompting the Bantwal Rural Police to register a case against him under Section 353(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
