Supreme Court Addresses Pollution Crisis in Delhi-NCR
Supreme Court Highlights Pollution Challenges
In light of the escalating air quality crisis in Delhi-NCR, the Supreme Court held a brief hearing on Monday, during which it made several significant observations. The court pointed out that one of the major reasons for the persistent pollution levels is the ineffective enforcement of orders and the reluctance of affluent individuals to alter their lifestyles. The justices expressed concern over the adverse effects this situation has on the poor and the general populace.
A bench comprising Chief Justice Suryakant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi, and Justice Vipul M. Pancholi made these remarks after amicus curiae Aparajita Singh informed the court that air pollution remains a critical issue, severely impacting the health of residents in Delhi-NCR. This situation persists despite numerous directives issued by the Supreme Court.
Singh noted, 'The implementation of these orders and actions according to protocols has always been sluggish.' In response, the Chief Justice-led bench remarked, 'The Supreme Court has issued several orders, yet there is no change in the situation. What is the solution? We need to provide practical orders that can be enforced; otherwise, people will continue to violate them.'
The Chief Justice emphasized, 'People must understand that it is time to change their lifestyles. The wealthy class disregards restrictions and continues to use diesel vehicles, generators, and other polluting gadgets. Emissions from vehicles are suffocating the national capital and surrounding areas. The poor and working-class individuals bear the brunt of this pollution and suffer the most.'
