Support for D.K. Shivakumar as Future Chief Minister Grows in Karnataka Congress
In a significant political development, Karnataka Congress legislator Basavaraj Shivaganga has voiced his support for Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar as a potential future Chief Minister. This endorsement follows a similar declaration from fellow legislator Iqbal Hussain, who confidently asserted that Shivakumar would lead the party to victory in the upcoming elections. However, Congress MLC Nagaraj Yadav has raised questions about the timing and authority of these claims, emphasizing the need for the party to focus on defeating communal forces. As the political landscape evolves, the BJP is quick to capitalize on signs of division within the Congress party.

Growing Support for Shivakumar
Karnataka Congress legislator Basavaraj Shivaganga has expressed his backing for Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar as the potential future Chief Minister of the state. This endorsement adds momentum to the increasing calls for a leadership change within the party. His remarks came just a day after legislator Iqbal Hussain publicly declared his support for Shivakumar for the top position. Shivaganga stated, “We do not know what fate has in store. We will discuss this after December. If our leader becomes Chief Minister, it will feel as good as if I were to become one myself. Let’s revisit this topic after December.”
Iqbal Hussain's Bold Claims
Previously, Iqbal Hussain stirred excitement by proclaiming that Shivakumar would “definitely be 200% the Chief Minister” and swore by Lord Mahadeva that the Congress would secure over 140 seats in the upcoming assembly elections, forming a government under Shivakumar’s leadership. However, Congress MLC Nagaraj Yadav responded cautiously to this support, questioning both the timing and authority behind such claims. He remarked, “What do you mean by next time? Currently, Siddaramaiah is the Chief Minister. No one knows what the high command will decide. D.K. Shivakumar has contributed significantly, but Siddaramaiah has also made substantial contributions.”
Skepticism Surrounds the Claims
Yadav also dismissed the validity of the comments made. He questioned, “Is Iqbal a decisive authority? Is Nagaraj a decisive authority?” He emphasized that only the leadership of the All India Congress Committee has the right to choose the Chief Minister. He added that the priority should be to defeat “communal forces” and regain power in 2028. The BJP quickly seized on the apparent signs of internal division within the Congress. The leader of the opposition in the Legislative Council, Chalavadi Narayanaswamy, stated, “This is their party’s issue. I do not wish to interfere.”
