Sunil Gavaskar, a legendary figure in Indian cricket and former captain, has unveiled the DP World Celebrity Golf Event. This charity initiative is set to gather prominent personalities from both Indian and international sports at the renowned Bombay Presidency Golf Club in Chembur, Mumbai, on Friday.
Aiding India's Sporting Icons
The primary goal of this event is to raise awareness for the CHAMPS Foundation (Caring, Helping, Assisting, Motivating, Promoting Sportsperson), which was established by Gavaskar. The foundation aims to assist former Indian athletes who are struggling financially or facing health issues. Since its launch, CHAMPS has been instrumental in providing support and dignity to those who have represented India on the global stage.

The charity event will host over 100 elite participants competing on an 18-hole course. Notable Indian cricket figures such as Yuvraj Singh, G.R. Vishwanath, Venkatesh Prasad, Harbhajan Singh, Ajay Jadeja, Parthiv Patel, Murali Kartik, S. Badrinath, Murali Vijay, and Nikhil Chopra will be present. Additionally, international cricketers like Eoin Morgan, Michael Vaughan, and David Lloyd will join the event. The lineup also includes celebrated athletes from other sports, such as tennis legend Leander Paes and badminton star Prakash Padukone, along with top Indian golfers Neha Tripathi, Ridhima Dilawari, and Gaurav Ghei.
Voices of Support for the Initiative
Gavaskar expressed his thoughts on the initiative, stating, "The CHAMPS Foundation was established with the conviction that those who have brought honor to India through sports should not be forgotten in difficult times. This event transcends golf; it is about giving back to the sports community that has enriched our lives. I am immensely thankful to DP World and all the legendary participants who have stepped up to support this cause. Their involvement showcases the strong bond and responsibility that characterizes the global sports community."
Leander Paes, the Indian tennis icon, remarked, "Sports instill resilience, discipline, and the significance of mutual support. The CHAMPS Foundation embodies these principles. It is uplifting to witness athletes from various disciplines come together to aid fellow sportspersons. This event celebrates the enduring spirit of sports and serves as a reminder that the sporting community is fundamentally a family."
