Sunil Gavaskar Critiques DJ Announcements During T20 World Cup Semifinal
Gavaskar's Discontent with DJ Announcements
Sunil Gavaskar, the former captain of Team India and a renowned cricket commentator, expressed his dissatisfaction with the loud DJ announcements during Jasprit Bumrah's over in the T20 World Cup 2026 semifinal against England, held at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on March 5.
India secured a spot in the final with a nail-biting seven-run victory over England. They set a formidable target of 253 runs, while the bowlers successfully restricted England to 246 runs, despite a remarkable innings from Jacob Bethell, who scored 105 runs off 48 balls.
Bowling Performance Highlights
Hardik Pandya led the bowling lineup with impressive figures of 2 wickets for 38 runs in four overs. Jasprit Bumrah (1/33), Axar Patel (1/35), and Varun Chakravarthy (1/64) each contributed with a wicket, ensuring India's thrilling victory.

Concerns Over DJ Distractions
Despite India's victory, Gavaskar was critical of the DJ playing 'Boom Boom Bumrah' during a crucial moment in the 16th over of England's innings, where Jacob Bethell was posing a significant threat.
While commenting during the match, Gavaskar stated that such DJ hype was unsuitable for a World Cup event.
"The DJ systems are encouraging the crowd to chant 'Boom Boom Bumrah' between deliveries. I'm not convinced this is beneficial for the game. It’s acceptable between overs, but not during deliveries. This is a World Cup," remarked the veteran cricketer.
Bumrah's Key Contributions
In the 16th over, Bumrah allowed only eight runs, showcasing his ability to remain calm under pressure and significantly impacting the match's momentum. When England required 45 runs off 18 balls, Bumrah returned for the 18th over, conceding just six runs with a series of precise yorkers that disrupted England's chase.
His two impactful overs, yielding only 14 runs, underscored his reputation as a match-winner and one of the top death-over bowlers globally.
Gavaskar's Critique of Laser Shows
Gavaskar's criticism of the DJ's interruptions came shortly after he condemned a laser show during India's final Super 8 match against the West Indies at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. During India's chase of 196 runs, a three-minute laser display occurred while the team was at 56/1 after the powerplay.
He argued that such distractions could hinder players' focus and are inappropriate for a World Cup setting.
"The laser show during the drinks break is challenging for batters. Adjusting to the light after darkness is not easy, especially with lasers involved. This is the World Cup. Do we really need this kind of entertainment during crucial moments? In the IPL, it might be acceptable, but not in knockout matches," Gavaskar stated.
India's Historic Opportunity
As Team India progresses to the final against New Zealand, they are on the brink of making history by potentially winning back-to-back T20 World Cup titles and their third overall. Furthermore, a victory would mark the first time a team has won the T20 World Cup on home soil.
