Sumit Advances in Men's 70kg Boxing at Asian Games 2026

Sumit's Victory in Boxing

Indian boxer Sumit has successfully moved on to the round of 16 in the men's 70kg category at the Asian Games 2026. He achieved this by defeating Thailand's Bunjong Sinsiri through a unanimous decision during their preliminary match on Monday. Sinsiri started the bout with an aggressive approach, landing several solid punches early on. However, Sumit gradually found his footing and rhythm as the first round progressed, ultimately winning it with a score of 4-1 from the judges.

In the second round, Sumit displayed greater effectiveness, carefully selecting his punches. As Sinsiri attempted to increase his aggression, Sumit gained confidence and delivered powerful strikes in the last 30 seconds, securing the round.

With a lead established, Sumit took a more strategic approach in the third round, avoiding unnecessary exchanges while continuing to land impactful punches and maintain control of the match.

Sumit dominated the final round, with all five judges awarding him the victory, culminating in a 5-0 unanimous decision.

On the same day, India had a varied yet eventful performance across different sports at the Asian Games 2026.

Soft Tennis

In soft tennis, Aadhya Tiwari and Jay Meena kicked off their mixed doubles Group B campaign with a commanding 5-0 victory against Cambodia's Viva Chao and Chanroseka Khun. They followed this up with another win over Mongolia's Bud Nyamdorj and Enkhkhuslen Ganbaatar, while their match against South Korea's Kim Yeon-hwa and Jaekyu Park was also scheduled.

Shooting

In the shooting events, Rudrankksh Patil secured third place, and Himanshu Dhillon finished seventh, both qualifying for the men's 10m air rifle individual final. Parth Mané placed 11th. Additionally, India earned a silver medal in the team final.

Swimming

In swimming, Srihari Nataraj advanced to the men's 50m backstroke final, with Rishabh Das listed as a reserve. However, Mani Akash and Gitesh Shah did not qualify for the men's 50m freestyle final, and Dhanush Suresh also missed out on the men's 100m breaststroke final.

Wushu

In wushu, Nyeman Wangsu finished in 15th place in the women's Changquan final.

In table tennis, India triumphed over Pakistan with a 3-0 victory in the women's team Group F match.
