Suchika Tariyal Makes History with India's First MMA Medal at Asian Games 2026

Historic Achievement in MMA

Indian Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) competitor Suchika Tariyal has etched her name in history by winning the first-ever bronze medal for India in this sport at the Asian Games 2026 held in Aichi-Nagoya on Monday.

Despite her fellow athlete Varun Sanyal being unable to compete due to medical issues, Suchika proudly represented India, securing a bronze after a 2-0 defeat against Singapore's Hui Hoon Teo.

Path to the Medal

On Sunday, Suchika guaranteed India’s first medal at the Asian Games by reaching the semifinals in the women's traditional 60kg MMA category. She triumphed over Altanchimeg Baigalmaa, who started aggressively in the second round, but Suchika's solid defense withstood the pressure.

In a pivotal moment, she executed a reversal, taking Baigalmaa to the ground and maintaining control until the round concluded, thus securing her victory and confirming India's first medal of the event.

India's Performance in Other Sports

India's participation in various sports at the Asian Games 2026 has been a mix of successes and challenges.

Soft Tennis

In soft tennis, Aadhya Tiwari and Jay Meena kicked off their mixed doubles Group B campaign with a commanding 5-0 victory against Cambodia's Viva Chao and Chanroseka Khun. They also triumphed over Mongolia's Bud Nyamdorj and Enkhkhuslen Ganbaatar, with a match against South Korea's Kim Yeon-hwa and Jaekyu Park scheduled next.

Shooting

India's shooting team continued to shine, with Rudrankksh Patil, Parth Mane, and Himanshu Dhillon earning a silver medal in the men's 10m air rifle team event, scoring 1890.1, just behind China's 1899.0. South Korea took home the bronze with 1841.4. This marks India's third silver medal in shooting at the Games.

Individually, Rudrankksh Patil secured third place, and Himanshu Dhillon seventh, qualifying for the men's 10m air rifle final, while Parth Mane finished 11th.

Swimming

In swimming, Srihari Nataraj advanced to the men's 50m backstroke final, with Rishabh Das as the reserve. Unfortunately, Mani Akash and Gitesh Shah did not qualify for the men's 50m freestyle final, and Dhanush Suresh missed out on the men's 100m breaststroke final.

Wushu and Table Tennis

In wushu, Nyeman Wangsu placed 15th in the women's Changquan final. Meanwhile, in table tennis, India achieved a 3-0 victory over Pakistan in the women's team Group F match.
