Successful High-Speed Rocket Sled Test for Fighter Jet Escape System by DRDO

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has marked a significant achievement by successfully conducting a high-speed rocket sled test for the fighter aircraft escape system. This test, carried out at the Terminal Ballistics Research Laboratory in Chandigarh, validated crucial components necessary for pilot safety during emergencies. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh praised the collaborative efforts of DRDO, the Indian Air Force, and other partners, highlighting this milestone as a step towards enhancing India's self-reliance in defense technology. The complexity of dynamic ejection tests sets them apart from traditional static tests, showcasing India's growing capabilities in advanced defense systems.

DRDO Achieves Milestone in Fighter Jet Safety

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has successfully conducted a high-speed rocket sled test for the fighter aircraft escape system at the Terminal Ballistics Research Laboratory (TBRL) in Chandigarh. This test involved a controlled speed of 800 km/h, validating critical components such as canopy severance, ejection sequencing, and complete aircrew recovery. The test was carried out in collaboration with the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), positioning India among a select group of nations with advanced escape system testing capabilities.

Complex Dynamics of Ejection Testing

Dynamic ejection tests are significantly more complex than static tests like net tests or zero-zero tests. They provide a real measure of the effectiveness of the ejection seat and canopy severance systems. The test involved a dual sled system at the front of the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA), which was propelled at a precisely controlled speed through the sequential ignition of multiple solid propellant rocket motors.

Praise from Defence Minister

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh commended the successful execution of the high-speed rocket sled test for the fighter aircraft escape system. He acknowledged the contributions of DRDO, the Indian Air Force, ADA, HAL, and the industry, describing this achievement as a significant milestone in India's journey towards self-reliance in defense capabilities.
