The 75-day Design Development Workshop focused on wood carving came to a successful end on December 30 in Samra (Runukothi), located within the Bharmour Assembly constituency. The closing event featured a tree planting initiative led by Tehsildar Shri Tej Raj, alongside the entire DDW Samra 2025 team. An exhibition showcasing the creations made during the workshop was also held, highlighting the skills of the participating artisans.

Participants expressed their appreciation to the Himachal Pradesh State Handicrafts & Handloom Corporation Ltd. (HPSHHCL), Shimla, and the Development Commissioner (Handicrafts), Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, for their support of this initiative in the remote Chamba district.

Chief Guest Shri Tej Singh, Tehsildar of Bharmaur, praised the artisans for their exceptional work. The HPSHHCL Chamba in-charge Shri Sheetal warmly welcomed the dignitaries present.

Designer Shri Laxman Kumar, associated with All Handicrafts, was appointed by HPSHHCL Shimla, while master craftsman Shri Hukum Chand led the workshop with great dedication. Together, they trained 20 artisans who had no previous experience in wood carving. The trainees produced impressive works, including a historic 5-foot tall Ardhanarishwar sculpture, a remarkable achievement never before seen in any workshop across Himachal Pradesh.

This workshop marked a significant milestone for the artisans involved. During the harsh winter months from December to April, when physical connectivity and job opportunities are limited in the region, this training has provided them with a sustainable livelihood. Participants urged authorities to continue offering such training programs, emphasizing that wood carving is a lifesaving skill. They committed to working diligently to bring their products to both national and international markets, aiming for a brighter future.
