Student's Failed Bank Heist in Kanpur: A Cautionary Tale
The Incident Unfolds
In Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, a B.Sc. student took his father's comments about earning money too seriously, leading him to devise a plan to rob a bank. The young man researched bank heists on YouTube and attempted to learn from various reels. He then set out alone to execute his plan. He focused on videos that depicted individuals successfully robbing banks solo. Fortunately, the vigilance and bravery of the bank staff led to his capture before he could escape.
Details of the Attempt
The incident occurred around 10 AM on Saturday at the State Bank of India branch in Patara, Ghazipur. Arriving on a bicycle, the suspect was armed with a firearm, a knife, a surgical blade, and a bag. When the security guard attempted to intervene, the assailant attacked him with the knife. Observing the commotion, the bank manager, cashier, and other employees bravely subdued him and tied him up.
Injuries and Investigation
During the scuffle, three individuals, including the bank manager, sustained injuries, while the suspect also incurred minor wounds and was taken to a hospital. Subsequent police investigations and a review of his mobile phone revealed significant details about the robbery attempt.
Profile of the Suspect
The accused, Lavish Mishra, is a student pursuing both B.Sc. and ITI courses. He had watched over 50 videos on YouTube about bank robberies, particularly those where individuals acted alone. Lavish's father, Awadhesh Mishra, is a farmer from a financially struggling family. When Lavish asked for money, his father would advise him on earning it through hard work, which Lavish misinterpreted as a cue to seek quick money through illegal means.
Misguided Aspirations
Lavish took his father's advice in the wrong direction, opting for a shortcut to wealth. He armed himself with a surgical blade and fashioned a bag to collect the stolen money. His initial plan was to intimidate the guard to instill fear among the bank staff. During police questioning, Lavish initially claimed he was coerced by others to commit the robbery, but this was quickly dismissed as evidence from his phone and his preparations indicated he acted independently.
Lack of Remorse
After his arrest, Lavish showed little regret for his actions. Even at the police station, he maintained an air of defiance, strolling around casually. He displayed a similar attitude when being taken to jail. This incident raises important questions about who is responsible for guiding youth towards the right path and preventing them from making poor choices.
