Student's Failed Bank Heist in Kanpur: A Cautionary Tale

In Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, a B.Sc. student took his father's comments about earning money too seriously, leading him to devise a plan to rob a bank. Inspired by videos he watched on YouTube, the young man attempted to execute his heist after learning from various online sources. He set out alone to carry out the robbery, having closely observed incidents where individuals managed to rob banks solo. However, due to the vigilance and bravery of the bank staff, he was apprehended before he could succeed.

Details of the Attempted Robbery

The incident occurred around 10 AM on Saturday at the State Bank of India branch in Patara, Ghazipur. Arriving on a bicycle, the young man entered the bank armed with a firearm, a knife, a surgical blade, and a bag. When a security guard attempted to intervene, he attacked the guard with the knife. In response, the bank manager, cashier, and other employees bravely subdued him and tied him up.

During the scuffle, three individuals, including the bank manager, sustained injuries. The assailant also suffered minor injuries and was taken to a hospital for treatment. Subsequent police investigations and a review of his mobile phone revealed significant details about the robbery attempt.

Profile of the Accused

The accused, identified as Lavish Mishra, is a student pursuing both B.Sc. and ITI. He had watched over 50 videos on YouTube related to bank robberies, particularly focusing on those executed by individuals acting alone. Lavish's father, Awadhesh Mishra, is a farmer, and the family is financially struggling. When Lavish asked for money, his father would advise him on how to earn it, which Lavish misinterpreted as a prompt to seek quick money through illegal means.

Misguided by his father's advice, Lavish decided to take a shortcut to wealth. He equipped himself with a surgical blade and a sewing needle, intending to use a bag to collect the stolen money.

Lavish's Justification and Attitude

Lavish initially planned to intimidate the guard to create panic among the bank staff. During police questioning, he claimed that he was coerced by others to commit the robbery, a statement the police dismissed. Evidence from his mobile phone and his preparations indicated that he had orchestrated the entire plan independently.

After his arrest, Lavish showed little remorse for his actions. Even at the police station, he maintained a defiant demeanor, strolling around casually and displaying an air of bravado as he was taken to jail. This incident raises important questions about who is responsible for guiding youth towards the right path and preventing them from making poor choices.
