Daily College's 'Immerse and Inspire' Program

On July 3, 2025, students from Daily College Junior School in Indore participated in the second day of their flagship program, 'Immerse and Inspire,' held at the Jimmy Magilligan Center for Sustainable Development. This experience aimed to demonstrate how sustainability can be seamlessly integrated into daily life.

Dr. (Mrs.) Janak Palta Magilligan, the center's director and a Padma Shri awardee, emphasized that sustainability can easily be incorporated into everyday routines. She introduced students to innovative technologies such as solar energy, wind energy, and zero waste practices. Students from various schools, including SSV from Coimbatore, SGIS from Kolhapur, and Gilco International from Mohali, enthusiastically engaged in the program.

One student expressed his amazement at a large auto-rotating solar thermal dish used for community cooking, stating, 'I will definitely build my solar kitchen one day.' Another student observed a demonstration of igniting a piece of paper using a solar cooker powered by sunlight, which sparked his curiosity about solar energy and its applications.

The students also explored the design of a naturally ventilated house that maintains a comfortable temperature without artificial cooling. They learned how plant arrangements and natural ventilation can reduce energy consumption. One student mentioned that the idea of reusing everything and composting is a new concept he is considering implementing at home.

During the visit, 77-year-old Padma Shri Janak Palta Magilligan shared her life experiences, recounting her work over the past 40 years aimed at empowering tribal women socially and economically. Her late husband, a British citizen, was also involved in sustainable development efforts in India. After his tragic passing in a road accident in 2011, she established her home in Sanawadia and continues her mission to this day.

Janak Palta Magilligan has taught millions how to simplify life and make it environmentally friendly by learning from nature, all without any financial support. Her dedication and passion have inspired both students and teachers alike.

This journey was not only educational but also instilled a sense of responsibility and awareness among the youth. All students and staff returned with renewed energy and curiosity, conveying the message that by adopting a sustainable lifestyle, we can secure our future.
