Netanyahu's Visit to the UAE

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu made a covert trip to the United Arab Emirates during the ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran, as confirmed by his office on Wednesday. This visit aimed to bolster the already established relations with the Gulf nation, which normalized ties with Israel in 2020. Netanyahu's meeting with UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan was described as a significant advancement in their diplomatic relations.

The announcement followed a statement from the U.S. ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee, indicating that Israel had dispatched Iron Dome air-defense systems and personnel to the UAE. This military deployment highlights the deepening partnership between the two nations.

Despite the UAE's silence on Netanyahu's visit, the country has been under threat from Iranian missile and drone attacks, even after a ceasefire was established last month. The UAE is keen to reassure investors of its safety and business viability.

Last week, the UAE's state news agency WAM reported that Netanyahu was among several leaders who reached out to the Emirati president to denounce Iranian assaults and express solidarity with the UAE. This marked a rare public acknowledgment of direct communications between the two nations, which have strengthened their ties since the 2020 Abraham Accords, a deal that has faced criticism from Iran.

Iran has long alleged that Israel has maintained a military and intelligence presence in the Emirates, and Israeli officials have made sporadic visits to the UAE since the normalization of relations.

Iran's Accusations Against Kuwait

Iran's foreign minister has accused Kuwait of trying to create discord by detaining four Iranians, whom Kuwait claims are members of the Revolutionary Guard. In a statement on X, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi called for their immediate release and warned that Iran would respond to this 'illegal act.' This incident occurred near Bubiyan Island, which is strategically significant due to its proximity to U.S. military operations against Iran.

Kuwait reported that four individuals were apprehended while two others fled during an attempted infiltration of Bubiyan Island on May 1. This island is currently home to Mubarak Al Kabeer Port, which is being developed as part of a broader Chinese infrastructure initiative.

Release of Iranian Human Rights Lawyer

Nasrin Sotoudeh, a prominent Iranian human rights attorney, has been released from prison over a month after her detention, according to her daughter and a rights organization. Sotoudeh, known for her defense of activists and women prosecuted for defying headscarf laws, was arrested by Iranian intelligence agents at her home in Tehran in April. Her release comes as U.S. President Donald Trump visits China, where discussions regarding the Iran conflict are anticipated.

The U.S.-based Human Rights Activists News Agency reported that Sotoudeh was released on bail from Tehran’s Evin Prison. Her daughter, Mehraveh Khandan, shared on social media that Sotoudeh was granted temporary custody. Iranian news agency ISNA also confirmed her release. Sotoudeh has faced imprisonment multiple times, and her husband, Reza Khandan, is currently incarcerated in the same facility.

Health Concerns for Nobel Laureate

Doctors have stated that Narges Mohammadi, a Nobel Peace laureate and activist, requires extensive medical treatment following her collapse in an Iranian prison. Mohammadi, 53, was urgently moved to a hospital in northwestern Iran on May 1 after losing consciousness. She was later transferred to a Tehran hospital for further evaluation.

Medical professionals indicated that her vascular condition has deteriorated since her last examination in 2024, recommending an eight-month treatment plan. Mohammadi received the Nobel Prize in 2023 while incarcerated and has faced multiple imprisonments throughout her career, with her latest arrest occurring in December in Mashhad.
