Strengthening Ties: Modi's Historic Visit to Israel
A Personal Connection
During a recent press conference, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed his gratitude towards India, sharing a personal story about his first date with his wife, Sara, at an Indian restaurant in Tel Aviv. This anecdote was shared in the context of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Israel, which aims to enhance diplomatic and economic relations between the two nations. Netanyahu remarked, “I think our first or second date was at an Indian restaurant in Tel Aviv. The food was incredible, and it was a memorable experience for both of us. I owe a great deal to you, as do my children.”
Netanyahu further emphasized the significance of the friendship between the two countries, stating, “I want to express how deeply we value our personal friendship and the bond between our governments and peoples. I am confident that this visit will further strengthen our ties.”
Modi's Historic Visit
Prime Minister Modi's two-day visit to Israel commenced on February 25, marking a significant milestone in the long-standing partnership between India and Israel. This trip is Modi's third to Israel, following his previous visits as Gujarat Chief Minister in 2006 and as Prime Minister in 2017 and 2026.
Netanyahu referred to Modi as a “dear friend” and expressed his heartfelt appreciation for the visit, stating, “I am deeply moved by your presence here today. You are a great friend of Israel and a strong advocate for the Indian-Israeli alliance.” He added, “I would even say you are more than a friend; you are like a brother.”
Reflecting on their past interactions, Netanyahu recalled a moment when they discussed walking into the Mediterranean Sea, humorously noting that while they didn’t walk on water, they have achieved remarkable progress in their bilateral relations, including doubling trade and tripling cooperation.
Amir Ohana, the Speaker of the Knesset, welcomed Modi, highlighting the historic nature of his address as the first Indian Prime Minister to speak in the Knesset. Modi received a warm reception, with chants of “Modi, Modi” and a standing ovation from the attendees.
Modi and Sara Netanyahu participated in an official reception ceremony at the Knesset, further solidifying the diplomatic ties between the two nations.
