Strengthening Ties: India and US Move Towards Historic Trade Agreement
Significant Developments in India-US Relations
Washington, Feb 5: External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar highlighted the imminent completion of a historic trade agreement between India and the United States, indicating that it is currently in the final stages of negotiation. He noted a "strong momentum" in the growing partnership between New Delhi and Washington.
Jaishankar made these remarks at the conclusion of his visit to the US from February 2-4, during which he attended the Critical Minerals Ministerial led by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
"I had a fruitful and positive visit to the US. I appreciate Secretary Rubio's warm hospitality," he shared on social media.
He elaborated that the trade deal is nearing completion and will usher in a new era in bilateral relations, presenting vast opportunities. The cooperation on critical minerals is also progressing swiftly, with expectations for further discussions on strategic matters, defense, and energy in the near future. Overall, a robust momentum is apparent," Jaishankar stated.
During his visit, the External Affairs Minister engaged with high-ranking officials from the US government.
This included meetings with Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, where they discussed the strategic and economic partnership between India and the US.
“I was pleased to meet Secretary Rubio this afternoon,” Jaishankar noted in a social media update following their discussion. “We had a comprehensive conversation covering our bilateral cooperation agenda, as well as regional and global matters.”
Jaishankar mentioned that their discussions encompassed various aspects of the India-US strategic partnership, including trade, energy, nuclear cooperation, defense, critical minerals, and technology.
Both parties agreed to expedite follow-up meetings to further their mutual interests. “We concurred on the prompt organization of various mechanisms to advance our shared goals,” he added.
As per the US State Department's summary, Jaishankar and Rubio deliberated on formalizing cooperation in critical minerals exploration, mining, and processing, which has become a key element of the India-US economic and strategic alliance.
This meeting occurred shortly after US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a trade agreement aimed at reducing barriers and enhancing market access between the two largest democracies.
Both Jaishankar and Rubio expressed their support for the agreement, emphasizing the significance of collaboration between the two democracies to unlock new economic prospects and enhance shared energy security objectives.
The discussions also addressed the regional and multilateral aspects of their partnership. They concluded their meeting by reaffirming their commitment to enhancing bilateral and multilateral cooperation through the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue, recognizing the importance of a prosperous Indo-Pacific region in advancing their shared interests.
Earlier that day, Jaishankar met with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent in Washington, expressing satisfaction with their discussions. “I had a productive conversation regarding the advancement of the India-US economic partnership and strategic collaboration,” he remarked.
These meetings underscore the expanding scope of India-US relations, which now encompass diplomacy, security, trade, and finance. Officials from both nations have stressed the necessity for closer coordination across various departments to translate political momentum into tangible results.
In recent years, India and the United States have significantly enhanced their cooperation in defense, energy, and emerging technologies, while also strengthening economic ties through trade and investment. Both nations have identified critical minerals and advanced technologies as priority sectors, given their crucial role in clean energy transitions and high-end manufacturing.
The recent high-level interactions follow ongoing discussions between New Delhi and Washington on regional and global issues, including developments in the Indo-Pacific. Officials from both sides have characterized the India-US partnership as a cornerstone of their respective foreign policy strategies.
