Bilateral Discussions Between India and Canada
New Delhi, March 2: Prime Minister Narendra Modi engaged in discussions with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney at Hyderabad House in New Delhi on Monday, focusing on enhancing their bilateral relationship.
The two leaders are set to evaluate the advancements made in various sectors under the India-Canada Strategic Partnership. They will also assess ongoing collaborations in crucial areas such as trade, investment, energy, critical minerals, agriculture, education, research, innovation, and cultural exchanges.
Additionally, Modi and Carney will participate in the India-Canada CEOs Forum later today. This meeting is particularly significant as it occurs during a pivotal phase in the normalization of relations between India and Canada. Both Prime Ministers have previously committed to fostering a constructive and balanced partnership, emphasizing mutual respect, strong interpersonal connections, and increasing economic synergies.
Earlier, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met with Prime Minister Carney prior to his meeting with Modi. Following their discussion, Jaishankar expressed his pleasure in meeting Carney, highlighting his dedication to establishing a forward-looking partnership.
Carney, along with his wife Diana Fox Carney, arrived in Mumbai on Friday for his inaugural official visit to India, which spans from February 27 to March 2. He reached New Delhi on Monday and shared on X, "Arrived in New Delhi to meet with Prime Minister Modi. Canada and India are two confident and ambitious nations eager to build boldly together. We're creating new partnerships in energy, talent, innovation, and AI to enhance security and prosperity for our citizens."
During his time in Mumbai, Carney engaged in various business activities, connecting with Indian and Canadian CEOs, industry leaders, financial experts, and educators, as well as Canadian Pension Funds operating in India.
Upon his arrival in Mumbai, Carney referred to India as "the world's fastest-growing major economy" and expressed his eagerness to establish partnerships that would generate new opportunities for Canadian workers and businesses.
In a video shared on X, he stated, "India is the world's fastest-growing major economy. We just arrived in Mumbai to meet with business leaders and forge partnerships that will unlock new opportunities for Canadian workers and businesses."
PM Modi last met Carney during the G20 Summit in Johannesburg in November 2025, where they discussed India's ambitious goal of achieving 50 billion USD in bilateral trade by 2030.
