Dhaka, Aug 19: According to Indian High Commissioner Dinesh Trivedi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi aims for Bangladeshi Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's upcoming visit to India to be a significant occasion. He emphasized that stronger connections between the two leaders would ultimately benefit the citizens and businesses of both nations.
During a reception organized by the Indian High Commission for prominent Bangladeshi business figures and a visiting delegation from the CII, Trivedi mentioned that Modi expressed the necessity for a meeting between the two leaders and assured that Rahman would be warmly welcomed during his stay in India, as reported by a local news portal.
"Prime Minister Modi has made it clear that we need to meet. Please convey to them that the Prime Minister of India guarantees an honorable reception for the honorable Prime Minister of Bangladesh during his visit," he stated.
Trivedi urged both nations to confront historical differences while focusing on future collaboration.
"I am not suggesting that you forget the past, but rather acknowledge it and resolve any lingering issues. It's essential to progress and not remain stagnant," he remarked.
He acknowledged that differences are a natural aspect of "vibrant democracies" and can be resolved through open dialogue and engagement.
"We fully recognize the concerns of our Bangladeshi counterparts. There are indeed issues to address. However, this is a partnership of equals," Trivedi added.
Emphasizing India's "Neighbourhood First" policy, he noted that while the two countries have experienced some "hiccups," they should not let these differences overshadow their broader relationship.
Trivedi also highlighted the importance of engaging with the younger generation in Bangladesh, expressing India's desire to collaborate with the "new Bangladesh" to create more opportunities for its youth.
"This is a new Bangladesh, filled with youth who have faced numerous challenges and made significant sacrifices. Our goal is to foster peace and prosperity, ensuring that the youth have the opportunities they deserve," he stated.
His comments come at a time of uncertainty regarding Rahman's planned visit to New Delhi for the BRICS summit on September 12-13, amid renewed tensions in bilateral relations over Dhaka's request for the extradition of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
