Strengthening Athlete-Centric Governance in Indian Sports
Emphasizing Athlete-Centric Governance
During the Golden Jubilee celebrations of the SJFI National Convention at the India Habitat Centre, PT Usha, the president of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), emphasized the necessity for governance in Indian sports to prioritize athletes. She stated that future policies should focus on placing athletes at the forefront of decision-making.
Usha highlighted that the welfare, preparation, and development of athletes should be the top priority for sports administrators and organizations, as noted in a recent release. The event was organized by the Delhi Sports Journalist Association (DSJA).
Athlete-Centric Governance as a Guiding Principle
Usha asserted, "The future of Indian sport must be guided by athlete-centric governance. Their preparation, welfare, and development should always be our foremost concern," while addressing sports media representatives.
She reflected on the significant advancements in India's sports landscape, noting that improved infrastructure, scientific training, and robust institutional support have empowered athletes to compete confidently on the global stage.
Importance of Grassroots Development
Usha stressed the critical role of grassroots development, stating that the true potential of Indian sports lies in the villages, towns, and schools where emerging talent can be found.
"The grassroots are where the real strength of Indian sports resides. By investing in coaching, infrastructure, and talent identification, we can consistently nurture world-class athletes," she added.
The Role of Sports Journalism
Usha recognized the significant impact of sports journalism in shaping the sporting environment and motivating young individuals to engage in sports.
"Sports journalists are not merely result reporters; they are storytellers who convey the struggles, emotions, and victories of athletes. Responsible sports journalism fortifies the foundations of our sports culture," she remarked.
India's Pivotal Moment in Sports
During a panel discussion at the convention, IOA CEO Raghuram Iyer noted that India is at a crucial juncture in its sporting journey, with increasing ambition, investment, and participation influencing the nation's future in sports.
"India is at an inflection point in sports. We possess the ambition, and considerable efforts are being made to fulfill those aspirations," Iyer stated.
Building a Robust Grassroots Ecosystem
Iyer emphasized that establishing a strong grassroots ecosystem is vital for sustaining India's growth in sports, starting with promoting mass participation and community engagement.
"We must develop a comprehensive sporting ecosystem that encourages more individuals to participate at the community level. Once this foundation is laid, the most talented athletes should receive the necessary resources and support to excel," he explained.
Ambition to Host Major Sporting Events
Iyer also pointed out India's aspirations to host significant international sporting events as part of a broader strategy to enhance infrastructure and elevate the country's global sports profile.
"We are looking to host major international competitions, including the Commonwealth Games, as part of our vision to lay the groundwork for potentially hosting the Olympic Games in the future," he concluded.
