Silchar, June 1: The newly appointed Minister of State for West Bengal, Anandamoy Barman, emphasized the need to enhance the historical and cultural ties between Assam and Bengal during a statement made on Monday.

Barman, who is a graduate of Assam University in Silchar, expressed that the longstanding relationship between Assam and West Bengal is rooted in shared social, linguistic, and cultural ties.

“The bond between Assam and Bengal is enduring. Many Bengali speakers reside in Assam, and communities like the Rajbongshi have strong connections with Assam and the Northeast. Our people, culture, and history unite us,” Barman remarked.

His comments are particularly relevant given the recent positive political interactions between the two states.

Assam's Chief Minister, Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, attended the oath-taking ceremony of West Bengal's Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, who reciprocated by being present at the swearing-in of Sarma's government in Guwahati on May 12.

Barman highlighted the importance of such gestures in fostering better understanding and collaboration between neighboring states. “The existing relationship should be further strengthened for the benefit of our people,” he stated.

His appointment as a minister has also brought recognition to Assam University, where he earned his Master's degree in Education in 2013.

Dr. Sreeparna Bhattacharjee, an Associate Professor in the Education Department, expressed pride in Barman's achievements, hoping he would become a leader focused on the welfare of the people, guided by education and values.

In response to the support from his mentors, Barman mentioned that he reached out to several teachers after his swearing-in to seek their blessings. “I am thrilled that my teachers and supporters are celebrating this achievement with me. Their blessings are invaluable,” he said.
