Strategic Meeting to Boost Indian Boxing Ahead of 2028 Olympics
High-Level Meeting for Indian Boxing
On Thursday, former World Boxing president Boris van der Vorst held discussions with Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya and Ajay Singh, the president of the Boxing Federation of India (BFI), in New Delhi. The focus of their conversation was on India's advancements in boxing and the preparations for the upcoming 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. During the meeting, Mandaviya reiterated the government's trust in the BFI and its leadership, emphasizing the importance of leveraging India's recent successes in international competitions to secure Olympic medals.
Van der Vorst shared insights from the meeting via an Instagram post, highlighting the minister's strong backing for the federation and Indian boxers, noting that both the government and the populace are rallying behind their aspirations.
Recent Success and Olympic Ambitions
India's boxing team had a remarkable outing at the 2026 Asian Games, clinching six medals—three gold and three bronze. Gold medalists included Lovlina Borgohain, Parveen Hooda, and Ankush Panghal, while Priya Ghanghas, Kapil Pokhariya, and Narender Berwal secured bronze medals. Additionally, the Indian boxing contingent achieved its best-ever performance at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, bringing home a total of 10 medals, which included seven gold and three silver.
Strategic Focus for 2028
Van der Vorst emphasized that transforming recent achievements into Olympic success will necessitate a collaborative effort from all involved in the sport. He stated, "Potential alone is insufficient. Achieving success in Los Angeles 2028 will require a united front from athletes, coaches, federations, the government, and the entire boxing community."
He also conveyed Mandaviya's message to the Indian boxing community, encouraging them to rally behind the athletes as they gear up for the next Olympic Games. Mandaviya remarked, "Let’s ensure that when Indian boxers enter the ring in 2028, they feel the support of an entire nation and a cohesive boxing community. The future is bright, and now is the moment to convert that potential into Olympic triumph!"
With less than two years until the Los Angeles Olympics, this meeting underscored the commitment to enhancing India's boxing program and ensuring that the nation's recent international achievements are translated into Olympic success.
