A statue honoring former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru was toppled by unidentified individuals in Cachar district, Assam, using an excavator, according to police reports on Wednesday.


The vandalism occurred late Monday night at the Pailapool market area, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Lakhipur police station.


Authorities have detained one individual and confiscated the excavator involved in the destruction of the 10-foot statue.


Officer-in-Charge of Lakhipur Police Station, Sankar Dayal, stated, “We have yet to locate any eyewitnesses to the event. CCTV footage captured unknown individuals demolishing the statue with an excavator.”


Political Reactions


Sajal Acherjee, president of Congress in Silchar, claimed that this act was a deliberate attempt to incite unrest among the populace as elections approach.


The state is expected to hold assembly elections in March or April.


Congress leader Pradeep Kumar noted that the statue was erected in 2000 in front of Nehru College, as reported by a local media outlet.


The Assam unit of Congress has demanded “strict and exemplary action” against those responsible for the vandalism.
