Sri Lankan Under-19 Cricketers Arrested for Invasion of Privacy

In a troubling incident, two Under-19 cricketers from Sri Lanka have been arrested for allegedly filming women in their hotel bathrooms. Following complaints from the victims, the players were released on bail but are under investigation for potential online sharing of the footage. This incident coincides with significant changes in Sri Lanka Cricket's leadership, including the formation of a new Transformation Committee led by cricket legend Kumar Sangakkara. The committee aims to oversee the future direction of the cricket board amidst ongoing scrutiny.

Arrest of Young Cricketers

Two cricketers from Sri Lanka's Under-19 team have been detained following accusations of recording individuals while they were bathing at their hotel in Narahenpita, Colombo. They have since been released on a personal bail amounting to LKR 500,000 (approximately $1,564), as reported by ESPNcricinfo.

The players were taken into custody earlier this week after complaints were lodged by female guests at the hotel, who alleged that they were filmed with mobile devices while in their bathrooms. According to Sri Lankan police, the Narahenpita authorities are currently probing whether any of these recordings have been disseminated on social media platforms.

After appearing at the Aluthkade Magistrate's Court for their preliminary hearing, the players are scheduled to return to court on May 25.

Transformations in Sri Lanka Cricket

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has yet to announce any disciplinary actions regarding the incident. However, the organization has experienced significant changes in leadership over the past two days, including the removal of previous officials and the establishment of a Transformation Committee.

Kumar Sangakkara is among nine individuals appointed to this committee, which was formed to oversee the operations of SLC following the government's decision to dismiss the former office bearers.

On April 29, SLC President Shammi Silva resigned immediately, as confirmed by an official statement from the board. The media release indicated that the entire leadership structure, including office bearers and Executive Committee members, has resigned as part of this decision.

Sangakkara is the most notable former cricketer on the panel, which also features Roshan Mahanama and Sidath Wettimuny. The committee primarily consists of professionals from corporate, legal, and political sectors, with former Member of Parliament Eran Wickramaratne appointed as its chair.
