Chasing a target of 151 runs, Sri Lanka successfully reached it in 19.4 overs, thanks to an impressive unbeaten half-century from Nilakshika Silva. She played a pivotal role in stabilizing the middle order after a shaky start. Silva was well-supported by 23-year-old Kaushani Nuthyangana, who contributed 24 runs off just 14 balls and hit the winning runs, securing Sri Lanka's triumph.

This defeat marks New Zealand's second consecutive loss in the Women's T20 World Cup 2026, having previously fallen to the West Indies by seven wickets.

New Zealand's Innings Overview

After opting to bat first, New Zealand faced an early setback with the loss of Isabella Gaze. However, they managed to recover through significant partnerships for the second and third wickets. Captain Amelia Kerr formed a 49-run partnership with Georgia Plimmer for the second wicket and later added 43 runs with Sophie Devine. Kerr and Devine accelerated the innings, scoring 23 runs in the 10th and 11th overs.

Sri Lanka's bowlers maintained discipline and executed sharp fielding, highlighted by Kawya Kavindi's exceptional running catch to dismiss Kerr, who scored 45 runs off 36 balls. Initial Momentum and Setbacks

Captain Chamari Athapaththu provided early momentum with four boundaries and a six but was dismissed for 27 while trying to accelerate, leading to a collapse that left Sri Lanka at 55/4.
