Sri Lanka's Historic Victory in WTC 2025-27

In the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27, Sri Lanka has achieved its inaugural victory, climbing to third place in the points table. Australia currently leads the standings after defeating the West Indies by 159 runs on their home ground. England holds the second position, having triumphed over India by five wickets in the Leeds Test match. In the second Test held in Colombo, Sri Lanka dominated Bangladesh, winning by an innings and 78 runs, thus taking a 1-0 lead in the series. The first Test in Galle ended in a draw.


Bangladesh Struggles in Second Innings

Bangladesh, which scored 247 runs in their first innings, collapsed for just 133 runs in the second innings. The team's wicketkeeper-batsman, Mushfiqur Rahim, was the top scorer with only 26 runs, as no other batsman managed to settle at the crease. For Sri Lanka, Prabath Jayasuriya was the standout bowler, claiming five wickets, while captain Dhananjaya de Silva and Tharindu Ratnayake took two wickets each. Asitha Fernando added one more wicket to the tally, and four Bangladeshi batsmen failed to reach double figures.

Earlier, Sri Lanka established a significant lead by scoring 458 runs in their first innings. Opener Pathum Nissanka delivered an impressive performance, scoring a century for the second consecutive Test match, amassing 158 runs off 254 balls with 19 boundaries. Nissanka had previously scored 187 runs in the first innings of the Galle Test. His remarkable contributions earned him the titles of Player of the Match and Player of the Series. Additionally, experienced batsman Dinesh Chandimal contributed 93 runs, while Kusal Mendis added 84 runs. Kamindu Mendis scored 33 runs, and wicketkeeper Lahiru Udara chipped in with 40 runs. For Bangladesh, Taijul Islam was the leading wicket-taker with five wickets, while Naim Hasan secured three wickets.
