Spencer Johnson Exits Big Bash League Due to Injury
Spencer Johnson's Injury Sidelines Him for BBL Season
Brisbane, Dec 3: Spencer Johnson, the left-arm fast bowler from Australia, will miss the upcoming Big Bash League (BBL) season as he continues to deal with a persistent back injury. Johnson made his debut with the Brisbane Heat in 2023 and was named player of the final during their championship victory in 2024.
Having represented Australia in five ODIs and eight T20Is, Johnson has been sidelined since his last appearance for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in IPL 2025 due to this back issue. His absence from the BBL raises concerns about his availability for the T20 World Cup next year.
"I've received tremendous support from experts throughout this process, and I'm optimistic about returning to the field soon. I know the Heat fans will rally behind the team this season, and I will be cheering for them from the sidelines," he expressed in a club statement on Wednesday.
Terry Svenson, CEO of Brisbane Heat, expressed his hopes for Johnson's swift recovery and looks forward to his return next year. "Spencer is making progress in his recovery from the back injury, which is encouraging. However, the latest updates indicate he won't be able to participate in this season's BBL. We are all disappointed for him but will continue to support him during his recovery. He has shown resilience in overcoming injuries in the past, and I am confident he will do so again," he stated.
The club announced that a replacement for Johnson will be confirmed closer to their first BBL match against the Melbourne Renegades, scheduled for December 15 in Geelong.
Brisbane Heat squad includes: Shaheen Shah Afridi (Pakistan), Tom Alsop (England), Colin Munro (New Zealand), Xavier Bartlett, Max Bryant, Lachlan Hearne, Spencer Johnson, Usman Khawaja, Matt Kuhnemann, Marnus Labuschagne, Nathan McSweeney, Michael Neser, Oli Patterson, Jimmy Peirson, Matthew Renshaw, Callum Vidler, Hugh Weibgen, Jack Wildermuth.
