Noelia Castillo's Heartbreaking Decision

Noelia Castillo, a 25-year-old from Spain, made the difficult choice to end her life through euthanasia after a prolonged battle with severe physical and emotional pain. She passed away on Thursday in Barcelona after receiving legally sanctioned life-ending medication. Since 2022, Castillo had been living with debilitating pain and paralysis from the waist down, a result of a traumatic incident where she jumped from a fifth-floor window following a gang rape at a state-run facility for vulnerable youth, as reported by various media outlets.

Reasons Behind Noelia Castillo's Euthanasia Decision

In her final days, Castillo remained resolute about her choice. In a poignant interview with a Spanish news channel just days before her passing, she expressed her unwavering conviction. “I was very clear about it from the beginning,” she stated. She candidly discussed the immense suffering she had endured, highlighting her struggles with pain, sleep, and daily activities. Despite the emotional toll on her family, she felt her decision was justified. “None of my family is in favor of euthanasia,” she acknowledged, adding, “But I think, all the pain I’ve suffered over the years... I just want to leave in peace now and stop suffering, full stop.” She emphasized that her happiness should not be overshadowed by her family's wishes.

Family's Opposition to Her Choice

Castillo's father, Geronimo Castillo, made numerous attempts to prevent her from proceeding with euthanasia. He sought legal intervention and garnered support from a religious legal organization. In August 2024, he succeeded in temporarily halting the procedure through a court appeal. However, the case continued to navigate the legal system, and in February 2026, Spain's Constitutional Court dismissed his challenge, affirming that there was no infringement of fundamental rights and allowing the euthanasia to proceed. While her father opposed her decision, her mother, Yolanda Ramos, took a different stance. Although she did not support euthanasia, she remained by her daughter's side until the end. “If she doesn’t want to live, I can’t take it anymore,” she expressed. “I am not in favor of euthanasia, but I will always be by her side until the very last moment,” she added, conveying her emotional support to Noelia.
