Spain Dominates Austria 3-0 to Advance in 2026 World Cup
Spain's Historic Victory in the Knockout Stage
Spain showcased their strongest performance of the tournament by defeating Austria 3-0 at SoFi Stadium, securing a place in the Round of 16 at the 2026 World Cup.
La Roja Breaks 16-Year Knockout Stage Drought
Prior to this match, Spain had not won a World Cup knockout game since their triumph on July 11, 2010. This victory against Austria is particularly significant as it ends a long-standing drought for La Roja in knockout matches.
In the 2014 World Cup held in Brazil, Spain faced elimination in the group stage after suffering heavy losses to the Netherlands (1-5) and Chile (0-2). The 2018 tournament in Russia saw them exit in the Round of 16, losing to the host nation in a penalty shootout (3-4) after a 1-1 draw. In 2022, they were again eliminated in the Round of 16 by Morocco, failing to score in a penalty shootout (0-3) after a goalless draw.
Oyarzabal's Two Goals Lead to Victory
The emphatic 3-0 win over Austria marks Spain's first knockout stage victory in 16 years, reminiscent of Andres Iniesta's memorable extra-time goal against the Netherlands in 2010.
Mikel Oyarzabal was the star of the match, scoring two goals with his characteristic poise, while Pedro Porro also found the net for the first time in his international career. Together, they dismantled the Austrian defense.
From the outset, Spain dominated the game, holding 65% possession and keeping Austria on the defensive. The breakthrough came in the 36th minute when Cucurella, after having a goal disallowed, assisted Oyarzabal, who calmly slotted the ball past the goalkeeper. Austria made a tactical change at halftime, bringing on Kalajdzic, but Spain responded with a goal in the 66th minute from Porro, following a cross from Baena, effectively sealing Austria's fate. In the final moments, Cucurella assisted Oyarzabal again, allowing him to score his second goal and finalize the scoreline.
Historic Achievements and Strong Defense
The match began with a historic moment as Barcelona's young talents, Lamine Yamal and Pau Cubarsi, became the first U20 duo to start a World Cup knockout match for a single nation since Pele and Jose Altafini for Brazil in 1958. Spain's defense was equally impressive, with Unai Simon, supported by Laporte and Cubarsi, achieving a fourth consecutive clean sheet, remaining unscored upon in the tournament.
Match Progression
Lamine Yamal tested Austrian goalkeeper Alexander Schlager early on, while Austria posed occasional threats on the counter. However, Spain quickly established control with their patient passing and relentless pressure. Aymeric Laporte came close from several corners, and Marc Cucurella thought he had scored, only for the referee to rule it out due to a foul on Schlager. This decision briefly frustrated Spain but did not disrupt their momentum.
Schlager made several crucial saves, denying Yamal and tipping Oyarzabal's shot around the post. The first goal came just before halftime when Cucurella delivered a perfect cross to Oyarzabal, who finished calmly to give Spain a deserved lead.
Just before the break, Alex Baena nearly doubled the lead with a stunning free-kick that hit the crossbar.
Spain resumed the second half with the same intensity, pinning Austria deep in their half. Although substitute Sasa Kalajdzic briefly threatened with a header that went over the bar, Austria struggled to maintain pressure. The match was effectively decided when Pedro Porro scored from Baena's inviting cross, marking his first goal for the national team.
Spain continued to dominate possession, with Yamal narrowly missing after a superb clearance from David Alaba. Oyarzabal capped off a brilliant performance by scoring his second goal in the closing stages, meeting another precise Cucurella delivery.
Advancing to the Round of 16
With this victory, the reigning European champions move forward unbeaten. Spain will face either Portugal or Croatia in the Round of 16 in Dallas on July 6. Austria exits the tournament after reaching the knockout stage for the first time since 1954.
