Spain's Firm Stance Against US Military Operations

Spain has taken a significant stand against the United States, asserting that it will not allow American fighter jets to traverse its airspace en route to potential military actions against Iran. This decision comes as a response to the announcement made by US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu regarding the initiation of military operations on February 28. The Spanish government has made it clear that any aircraft involved in attacks on Iran will be denied passage through its airspace, including the use of military bases such as the Rota Naval Base and Morón Air Base.

According to the Spanish newspaper El País, this announcement has sparked discussions across global media outlets. The US military typically utilizes these bases for refueling and logistical support before heading to the Middle East, making Spain's airspace a crucial strategic point. The B52 bombers and other aircraft, including F-15s and F-35s, often rely on this route for operations in the region.

On March 30, 2026, Spain reiterated its position, with Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares stating that the bases would not be used for any operations outside the scope of the UN Charter and agreements with the US. Defense Minister Margarita Robles emphasized that Spain would not permit the use of its military installations for actions related to the conflict in Iran. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has previously condemned such attacks as reckless and illegal, reinforcing Spain's commitment to not participate in unilateral military actions that violate international law.

As a result of Spain's refusal, US aircraft are now being rerouted through Germany, Italy, or Portugal, leading to longer and more costly journeys. Despite threats from Trump to sever trade relations with Spain, the Spanish government, under the leadership of the Socialist Party, remains steadfast in its opposition to supporting US and Israeli military actions.
