Southwest Monsoon Set to Arrive in Northern India Soon
Monsoon's Approach to Northern India
The southwest monsoon, which has already reached significant areas of central, western, and eastern India over the past two days, is expected to make its way to parts of Delhi, Haryana, and Punjab within the next two to three days.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), rainfall is anticipated between June 20 and June 25 across a large portion of northwestern India, including Haryana, Punjab, Chandigarh, Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, eastern Rajasthan, Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh.
An official from the IMD confirmed that the monsoon could arrive in Delhi by June 22, ahead of the usual date of June 30. The IMD also indicated that the rest of the country may experience monsoon rains earlier than the standard timeline next week.
Due to a lack of rainfall since the beginning of June, temperatures have surged, leading to heatwave conditions in many parts of northwestern and central India since June 8 or 9.
The IMD noted that the formation of a low-pressure area over West Bengal and Gujarat facilitated the rapid advancement of the monsoon between June 16 and June 18. Typically, the monsoon arrives in Kerala by June 1, reaches Mumbai by June 11, and brings widespread rainfall across the country by July 8.
