Southwest Monsoon Expected to Arrive Early in India

Monsoon Forecast for Central and Eastern India
The India Meteorological Department has announced that the southwest monsoon is anticipated to reach parts of central and eastern India by June 5.
This year, the monsoon made its first appearance in the southern Andaman Sea on May 13, which is earlier than the typical date of May 21. It is also projected to arrive in Kerala approximately a week ahead of the usual June 1 timeline.
Favorable conditions are expected to promote the monsoon's advancement over additional regions, including parts of the southern Arabian Sea, the Maldives, Comorin area, Lakshadweep, Kerala, various regions of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, parts of coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema, and several areas in the Bay of Bengal and Northeast India.
Typically, the southwest monsoon season commences in June and begins to withdraw by September. The onset is officially declared by the India Meteorological Department when it reaches Kerala.
If the forecast holds true, this would mark the earliest arrival in Kerala since 2009.
From May 15 to May 22, India recorded rainfall that was 106% above normal, with the southern peninsula experiencing a surplus of 273% and central India 232%.
In April, the India Meteorological Department indicated that this year's southwest monsoon rainfall is likely to exceed normal levels.
Red Alert Issued for Coastal Karnataka
On Saturday, the weather department issued a red alert for coastal Karnataka, warning of extremely heavy rainfall in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and Uttara Kannada districts.
In the 24 hours leading up to 8:30 am on Friday, Dakshina Kannada recorded 18.4 mm of rain, significantly higher than the normal 5 mm, while Udupi saw 33.4 mm of rainfall.
