Southwest Monsoon Arrives in West Bengal, Bringing Relief from Heat

Monsoon Update for West Bengal

On Friday, the meteorological department announced that the southwest monsoon has reached most parts of West Bengal, except for certain areas in Purulia district, providing much-needed relief from the hot and humid weather.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) indicated that thunderstorms and rain are expected in Kolkata and several districts in the southern region of the state on Friday.

The department noted that favorable wind patterns and significant moisture from the Bay of Bengal will likely lead to rain and thunderstorms in southern Bengal, with heavy rainfall anticipated in the sub-Himalayan districts of the northern part of the state until June 15.

According to the IMD, the southwest monsoon has advanced into most areas of West Bengal, with the remaining regions expected to be covered in the next two to three days, excluding some parts of Purulia district.

The IMD also forecasted heavy rainfall over the next five days in sub-Himalayan districts such as Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar, and Cooch Behar.

In the past 24 hours, as of 8:30 AM on Friday, Malda in North Bengal and Haldia in South East Medinipur recorded 66 mm of rainfall each, the highest in the state. Other areas that experienced significant rainfall include Bardhaman (60 mm), Bankura (32 mm), and Jhargram (31 mm).

The meteorological department predicts thunderstorms and rain for Kolkata, East Medinipur, West Medinipur, Jhargram, Bankura, Purulia, and West Bardhaman on Friday.
