South Africa's Fightback on Day Two

In the ICC World Test Championship match held in Gqeberha, South Africa's captain Temba Bavuma and Ryan Rickelton formed a crucial partnership, adding 52 runs for the fifth wicket. This came after the team found themselves in a precarious position at 40 for 4 on the second day of play.

The day's play was significantly impacted by weather, starting six hours later than planned due to ongoing rain, which had also caused the first day to be completely washed out. A remarkable catch by Matt Renshaw at first slip concluded a day where South Africa lost three wickets for 77 runs in less than 30 overs.

Scott Boland's Stellar Performance

Scott Boland, who had already made an impact by dismissing Aiden Markram and David Bedingham on the first day, continued his excellent form by taking two additional wickets, achieving his best Test figures against South Africa. He struck early, beating Bavuma's edge with his first delivery of the day. Debutant Marques Ackermann faced a challenging start, falling to a bouncer from Pat Cummins and edging Boland to wicketkeeper Alex Carey for just six runs off 38 balls.

Matthew Breetzke, participating in his third Test and first first-class match since February, appeared to be settling in but fell victim to Mitchell Starc's clever bowling, edging a delivery to the wicketkeeper.

Bavuma's Steady Leadership

Wiaan Mulder joined Bavuma at the crease, and together they managed to navigate through the remaining overs. Bavuma ended the day not out on 41, providing a glimmer of hope for South Africa following their early batting struggles.

Series Context

Australia currently leads the series 1-0 after their commanding 214-run win in the first Test held in Durban.
