Sourav Ganguly Reveals Insights on VVS Laxman's Frustration and Gautam Gambhir's Coaching Journey

Sourav Ganguly's Candid Interview

Renowned as one of India's most successful cricket captains, Sourav Ganguly recently shared intriguing revelations during an interview. He discussed how VVS Laxman had been upset with him, leading to a three-month period of silence between them. Additionally, he was asked about Gautam Gambhir's performance as a head coach and his evaluation of it.

In a conversation with a news agency, Ganguly recounted various anecdotes and insights. He mentioned that one of the toughest decisions as a captain was choosing between Harbhajan Singh and Anil Kumble. Both players were not the type to enjoy sitting out during a five-day Test match; instead, they would inquire about their exclusion, regardless of the conditions. Having such champion players was a privilege, as they were always eager to play and contribute to the team's success.

VVS Laxman is celebrated among India's cricket legends, yet he never had the opportunity to play in a World Cup. Before the 2003 World Cup, he was removed from the team, with Dinesh Mongia taking his place, a decision influenced by Ganguly. Reflecting on this, Ganguly revealed that Laxman did not speak to him for three months following the decision.

During this period, Ganguly noted that Laxman was understandably upset and distressed. It was natural for anyone to feel angered after being excluded from a major event like the World Cup, especially a player of Laxman's caliber. However, after the World Cup, Laxman was pleased with the team's performance.

Ganguly further shared that upon their return, Laxman rejoined the ODI team and excelled in matches against Pakistan and Australia, playing a crucial role in their first victory in Pakistan.

Regarding Gautam Gambhir, Ganguly expressed confidence in his abilities as a coach. Although Gambhir's start was slow, with losses to Australia and New Zealand, the team eventually triumphed in the Champions Trophy. The upcoming series against England is expected to be significant for him. Ganguly, who has played alongside Gambhir, praised him as a passionate individual who respects senior players.
