Sonia Gandhi to Lead Congress Strategy Meeting Ahead of Monsoon Session
Key Meeting to Shape Congress's Approach
On Tuesday, Sonia Gandhi, the leader of the Congress parliamentary party, will preside over a crucial meeting aimed at finalizing the party's strategy for the upcoming monsoon session of Parliament.
The session is expected to be tumultuous, as the Congress party plans to confront the government on various issues. The opposition is likely to express strong objections regarding the Election Commission's initiative for a special intensive revision of the voter list in Bihar.
Additionally, Congress has been vocal about its demand to discuss the Pahalgam attack, Operation Sindoor, and subsequent diplomatic activities.
Participation of Key Leaders
Sources within the party indicate that Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, are expected to attend the meeting, which will take place at Sonia Gandhi's residence on 10 Janpath.
Extended Monsoon Session
The government has announced that the monsoon session of Parliament will run from July 21 to August 21, extending the duration by a week compared to the original schedule. This extension suggests a significant legislative agenda ahead.
Initially, the session was set to conclude on August 12, but it has now been prolonged. This extended session coincides with the government's plans to introduce several key bills, including those aimed at facilitating private sector entry into the nuclear energy sector.
Legislative Changes in Nuclear Sector
The government intends to amend the 'Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage Act' and the 'Nuclear Energy Act' to implement the central budget's announcement regarding the opening of the nuclear sector to private players. The opposition is demanding a debate on Operation Sindoor.
Opposition's Demand for Accountability
The opposition parties are also seeking answers from the government regarding U.S. President Donald Trump's claim of mediating to end military conflict between India and Pakistan. However, the government has dismissed Trump's assertions.
