Sonia Gandhi Critiques Modi Government Over Proposed Employment Bill
Sonia Gandhi's Strong Opposition to the VB-G Ramji Bill
On Saturday, Congress leader Sonia Gandhi released a video statement sharply criticizing the Modi administration for the proposed VB-G Ramji Bill. This legislation aims to replace the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA). In her message, Gandhi accused the BJP-led government of neglecting the interests of rural poor over the past 11 years and undermining MGNREGA, which serves as a crucial social safety net.
Concerns Over Rural Employment
Gandhi emphasized that the Modi government has made every effort to weaken MGNREGA, which proved to be a lifeline for the impoverished during the COVID-19 pandemic. She also accused the government of planning to abolish this scheme without adequate consultation. According to Gandhi, the recent arbitrary changes to MGNREGA threaten the livelihoods of millions who rely on rural employment programs. She stated, "By undermining this law, the Modi government has attacked the interests of millions of farmers, laborers, and landless rural poor."
Political Backlash Against the Bill
These remarks from Sonia Gandhi come amid rising political opposition to the VB-G Ramji Bill, with Congress alleging that this move will weaken employment guarantees and diminish the rural welfare protections embedded in MGNREGA. She remarked that the Modi government has attempted to undermine the interests of the poor, stating, "Recently, the government bulldozed MGNREGA... Congress played a vital role in bringing and implementing this scheme, which is linked to the interests of the nation and its people. The Modi government has attacked the interests of the poor through this initiative."
