Sonia Gandhi Critiques India's Silence on Israel's Actions in Gaza and Iran
Sonia Gandhi's Strong Criticism of India's Stance
On Saturday, Sonia Gandhi, the leader of the Congress parliamentary party, expressed her strong disapproval of India's silence regarding the devastation in Gaza and Iran. She emphasized that this silence not only represents a loss of voice but also a surrender of values. In her article titled 'It is not too late to hear India's voice,' she accused the Narendra Modi government of abandoning India's long-standing and principled commitment to a peaceful two-state solution that envisions an independent Palestine alongside Israel.
In her piece, Gandhi also criticized former U.S. President Donald Trump for leading the region down a 'destructive path' after previously speaking out against endless wars. She stated in her article published in a prominent newspaper, 'India's silence on the devastation in Gaza and the escalating tensions with Iran reflects a troubling departure from our moral and diplomatic traditions.'
She asserted, 'This is not just a loss of voice; it is a surrender of values.' Gandhi urged that it is still not too late for India to speak out clearly, act responsibly, and utilize every diplomatic channel available to de-escalate tensions and promote dialogue in West Asia.
She further stated that in light of this humanitarian disaster, 'the Modi government has nearly abandoned India's long-term and principled commitment to a peaceful two-state solution, which envisions a sovereign, independent Palestine living alongside Israel in mutual security and respect.' Gandhi remarked that on June 13, 2025, the world witnessed once again the 'dangerous consequences of unilateral militarism when Israel conducted a deeply troubling and unlawful attack against Iran and its sovereignty.'
She condemned the bombings and targeted killings on Iranian soil, which represent a dangerous escalation with serious regional and global repercussions. Gandhi noted, 'Like many of Israel's recent actions, including its brutal and disproportionate campaign in Gaza, this operation was executed with complete disregard for civilian lives and regional stability. Such actions will only increase instability and sow the seeds of conflict.'
