Sonia Gandhi's Strong Criticism of India's Stance

On Saturday, Sonia Gandhi, the head of the Congress Parliamentary Party, expressed her strong disapproval of India's silence regarding the devastation in Gaza and Iran. She stated that this silence not only represents a loss of voice but also a betrayal of core values. In her article titled 'It’s Not Too Late for India to Speak Up,' she accused the Modi government of abandoning India's long-standing and principled commitment to a peaceful two-state solution, envisioning an independent Palestine alongside Israel.

In her piece, Gandhi also criticized former U.S. President Donald Trump for leading the West Asia region down a 'destructive path' after speaking out against endless American wars. She noted in her article published in a prominent newspaper that the silence from New Delhi regarding the devastation in Gaza and the escalating tensions with Iran signifies a troubling departure from India's moral and diplomatic traditions. This silence, she emphasized, is not just a loss of voice but a surrender of values.

Gandhi urged that it is still not too late for India to take a stand, advocating for responsible actions to de-escalate tensions and promote dialogue in West Asia through all available diplomatic channels.

She further remarked that in the face of this humanitarian crisis, the Modi government has nearly abandoned India's long-term and principled commitment to a peaceful two-state solution, which envisions a sovereign and independent Palestine living alongside Israel in mutual security and respect. Gandhi highlighted that on June 13, 2025, the world witnessed once again the dangerous consequences of unilateral militarism when Israel executed a deeply troubling and unlawful attack against Iran and its sovereignty.

The Indian National Congress condemns the bombings and targeted killings on Iranian soil, which represent a dangerous escalation with serious regional and global repercussions. She stated, 'Like many of Israel's recent actions, including its brutal and disproportionate campaign in Gaza, this operation was carried out with complete disregard for civilian lives and regional stability. Such actions will only increase instability and sow the seeds of conflict.'
