Sonam Yeshey Sets T20 Cricket Record with Eight-Wicket Haul
Historic Achievement in T20 Cricket
In a remarkable achievement, Sonam Yeshey, a left-arm spinner from Bhutan, has made history by becoming the first bowler to secure an eight-wicket haul in T20 cricket, as reported by ESPNcricinfo.
Record-Breaking Performance Against Myanmar
During the third T20 International against Myanmar held in Gelephu on Friday, the 22-year-old bowler delivered an extraordinary performance, finishing with figures of 7 wickets for just 8 runs in 4 overs, which included one maiden over and an impressive economy rate of 1.75.
This outstanding spell was instrumental in Bhutan bowling out Myanmar for a mere 45 runs while chasing a target of 128. Bhutan triumphed in the third T20I of the five-match series by a significant margin of 82 runs.
Unbeaten Streak in the Series
Currently, Bhutan leads the T20I series against Myanmar with an unbeaten record of 4-0. In the ongoing five-match series, Sonam Yeshey has claimed a total of 12 wickets across four matches, with the final match scheduled for Monday.
A Unique Milestone in T20 History
Before Sonam Yeshey's groundbreaking achievement, only two bowlers had previously taken seven wickets in men's T20 internationals. Malaysia's Syazrul Idrus recorded 7/8 against China in 2023, while Bahrain's Ali Dawood achieved 7/19 against Bhutan in 2025.
Notably, no bowler has ever taken an eight-wicket haul in men's T20 cricket, and only two players have managed a seven-wicket haul in T20 matches: Colin Ackermann (7 for 18 for Leicestershire against Birmingham Bears in 2019) and Taskin Ahmed (7 for 19 for Durbar Rajshahi against Dhaka Capitals in 2025).
Sonam Yeshey's T20I Career
Sonam Yeshey made his T20I debut against Malaysia in July 2022. Since then, he has taken 37 wickets in 34 matches and 33 innings, boasting an average of 17.37 and an economy rate of 5.69. His record includes one four-wicket haul and several five-wicket hauls in the shortest format.
