Sonam Wangchuk Celebrates Release After 170 Days in Custody
Sonam Wangchuk's Joyful Return
Renowned climate activist Sonam Wangchuk has expressed his happiness upon being released from jail after 170 days of detention. He shared that returning to his people and the mountains feels wonderful. Wangchuk was taken into custody under the National Security Act following protests in Leh last September. His release came after the government revoked the orders against him.
Gratitude and Hope for Change
Wangchuk extended his gratitude to the entire nation for their support during his struggle and expressed optimism for a 'new dawn' for the cause he champions.
Flexible Approach to Ladakh's Demands
Indicating a flexible stance in discussions with the central government regarding Ladakh's political demands, Wangchuk mentioned his preference for solutions based on 'give and take.' He believes that the goal of negotiations should be to create a win-win situation for both parties. However, other significant organizations in Ladakh have made it clear that they will not compromise on their core demands, while Wangchuk maintains that mutual understanding and flexibility are essential for successful dialogue.
Key Issues in Upcoming Talks
Wangchuk clarified that the upcoming discussions will primarily focus on two major issues: the inclusion of Ladakh in the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution and the restoration of democracy (full statehood or an assembly). He hopes that even if consensus on both demands is not reached, at least one issue can be addressed. According to him, negotiations should not lead to one side conceding defeat; rather, they should foster a 'win-win' scenario where both parties respect each other's needs and concerns.
