The Wisdom of Ignoring Others' Opinions: A Timeless Tale
The Dilemma of the Old Man and His Donkey
Many individuals have a tendency to interfere in the affairs of others. If you attempt something, they will offer their opinions or mock you. However, as the saying goes, 'People will always talk; it's their job to comment.' You should always follow your own instincts. Listen to everyone, but act only on what feels right to you. Otherwise, you may never find happiness in life. Let's illustrate this with a story.
The Old Man's Predicament with the Donkey
Once upon a time, an elderly man was walking to the market with his son and their donkey. Along the way, a passerby remarked, 'What’s the use of that donkey if no one is riding it? Why don’t one of you sit on it?' Taking this advice, the old man allowed his son to ride the donkey.
As they continued, another person commented, 'Look at that lazy boy riding the donkey while his old father walks behind!' Hearing this, the old man made his son get off and climbed onto the donkey himself. A little further, some women saw them and said, 'Look at that old man! He’s enjoying himself on the donkey while making the poor child walk. He should let the boy ride too.' So, the old man let his son join him on the donkey.
Then, another passerby exclaimed, 'What cruel people! Two of them are riding the donkey at once. Have they no compassion?' This made the old man furious. He thought, 'What should I do? If I don’t let anyone ride, people stare. If one of us rides, they criticize. If we both ride, they call us heartless.' In the end, the old man and his son decided to continue their journey without anyone riding the donkey.
Moral of the Story
In life, you will encounter all types of people. They will comment on trivial matters, stop you, and even advise you on what to do. However, you should only do what feels right to you. Don’t make decisions based on others' opinions, or you will always regret it. Listen to everyone, but follow your own heart.
