Social Media Reacts to US Midterm Elections with Gyanesh Kumar Memes
Social Media Buzz Following US Elections
Politicians, activists, and social media users quickly drew comparisons between the US midterm election outcomes and allegations of electoral misconduct in India.
New Delhi, Nov 5: On Wednesday, Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar became a trending topic on social media, not due to any political scandal in India, but following a significant electoral defeat for the Republican Party led by US President Donald Trump during the midterm elections.
Comments ranged from Abhijeet Dipke, founder of the Cockroach Janta Party, who remarked, “Gyanesh Kumar would’ve never allowed this to happen to Trump,” to an anonymous user on X suggesting that Trump “desperately needs a Gyanesh.” The platforms were flooded with memes and witty remarks.
Humor and irony were employed to underscore the ongoing controversy regarding alleged vote rigging in India and the Chief Election Commissioner's involvement in it.
Many quickly drew parallels between the US election results and the current allegations of electoral malpractice in India, which are intensifying political discord.
“Trump Sahib, if you had brought Gyanesh along, you wouldn’t be facing this situation today,” stated Pawan Khera, head of Congress's media and publicity department, in a post on X.
Activist and lawyer Prashant Bhushan took a jab at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying: “Modi: ‘I’m sorry I couldn’t send Gyanesh to you, my friend! I had to prioritize my own issues. But now, the people here have confined him at home! He can’t even assist me now!’”
Dipke added the hashtag #JustSaying to his brief post.
Another user shared a meme showing Trump entering a room where Modi awaited him, captioned: “Bro, give me Gyanesh.”
A satirical news post claimed, “Gyanesh Kumar will head to the US as Trump begins to lose in the midterm elections.”
“Trump wants Gyanesh Kumar to oversee elections in the US now,” read another humorous post on X.
One more post suggested, “Gyanesh Kumar is reportedly set to travel to the US at Donald Trump’s request to educate election officials on conducting fair elections.”
This surge of memes followed a strong showing by the opposition Democratic Party, which gained control of the US Congress and won crucial gubernatorial races, with ramifications that extend beyond the US.
Trump's Republican Party faced considerable losses in several traditional strongholds, including Texas, Georgia, and Iowa, where they lost gubernatorial races to Democrats.
Additionally, the Republicans encountered challenges in Senate races across Texas, Maine, South Carolina, North Carolina, Kansas, and Iowa. Trump had campaigned vigorously, urging voters to view the elections as a referendum on his presidency.
The significant defeats were attributed to public dissatisfaction with Trump's policies, particularly the war on Iran, which reportedly led to rising living costs and increased diesel prices.
The wave of jokes and parodies surrounding the US midterm elections coincided with a political controversy in India regarding alleged discrepancies in electoral rolls. Opposition parties have accused Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar of colluding with the ruling party during Assembly and Lok Sabha elections, demanding his immediate resignation.
In contrast, the BJP has accused the Opposition of inciting chaos and making excuses for their electoral losses.
