Skoda and Volkswagen's Plans for Hybrid Vehicles

Skoda and Volkswagen have announced their intentions to enter the Indian market with hybrid and electric vehicles. The two European manufacturers are developing strong hybrid midsize SUVs and sedans, which are expected to debut by 2028.

Hybrid Models Built on the IMP 21 Platform

The upcoming hybrid SUVs and sedans from Skoda and Volkswagen will utilize the IMP21 platform, which is an adaptation of the existing CMP (China Main Platform). Volkswagen aims to localize production significantly to ensure that these electric vehicles align with domestic pricing and regulatory standards. The CMP architecture is versatile, accommodating internal combustion engines, strong hybrids, and electric powertrains.

Competition for Skoda and Volkswagen's Hybrid Offerings

The midsize hybrid SUVs from Skoda and Volkswagen will compete with models such as the third-generation Hyundai Creta, second-generation KIA Seltos, new Renault Duster, and a Nissan competitor, all of which are set to launch with strong hybrid powertrains. Currently, only Maruti Suzuki and Toyota provide hybrid midsize SUVs, namely the Grand Vitara and Hyryder. Additionally, Skoda and Volkswagen's hybrid sedans will compete with the Honda City e:HEV.
