Emergency Evacuation Efforts by Singapore

Singapore, March 9: The government of Singapore has announced its decision to send a RSAF A330 Multi-Role Tanker Transport (MRTT) aircraft to assist Singaporeans in the Middle East, facilitating their evacuation from Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, scheduled for March 10, 2026.

According to a joint statement from Singapore's Foreign and Defence Ministry, this action is in response to the urgent requests from Singaporeans located in Bahrain, Jordan, Kuwait, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia, who require assistance in returning home due to limited commercial travel options available in the area.

Plans are also underway for a second flight from Saudi Arabia on March 12, 2026. The deployment of the MRTT aircraft is specifically aimed at supporting these evacuation operations. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) will be contacting Singaporeans who have expressed interest in the assisted departure for further details.

Previously, Singapore expressed its disappointment over the breakdown of negotiations that led to military actions by the US and Israel against Iran, which prompted retaliatory strikes by Iran on several countries including Bahrain, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE.

Singapore has called for all involved parties to resume negotiations to seek a peaceful resolution in line with international law and the UN Charter.

Given the unstable security conditions and flight disruptions in the region, Singaporeans are advised to postpone any travel plans to Israel, Iran, and the broader Middle East. Those currently in the area are urged to take necessary safety precautions, such as staying indoors, seeking shelter when necessary, closely monitoring news updates, and following local government advisories. A spokesperson from the MFA emphasized the importance of remaining vigilant.

Furthermore, Singaporean travelers are encouraged to explore alternative travel options that do not require transiting through the region, due to the potential for airspace closures and flight cancellations. It is also strongly recommended that travelers obtain comprehensive travel insurance.
