Silluk Village's Transformation Recognized in National Curriculum

Itanagar, June 23: A charming village located in the East Siang district of Arunachal Pradesh has gained recognition in the NCERT’s CBSE Class 3 Environmental Studies (EVS) textbook, specifically in Chapter 12, titled “Taking Charge of Waste.”

This chapter showcases the incredible transformation of Silluk village from a place plagued by waste to India’s first officially recognized Zero-Waste Village.

Previously known as “Gobar Basti” due to the prevalence of open cattle grazing and littered streets, the village underwent a significant change in 2019 when local youth Kepang Nong Borang from the Adi tribe initiated the Swachh Silluk Abhiyan (SSA).

This grassroots initiative has restored dignity, hygiene, and sustainability to the community, serving as a model for community-driven development.

Chairman Borang stated, “We embarked on this mission in 2019. Since then, we have been honored with three State Awards and the esteemed 11th Balipara Foundation Award. Silluk is evolving into a vibrant tourism hub.”

He called for increased government support, saying, “With national attention now focused on Silluk, we urge the authorities to allocate specific funds and develop it as a model eco-tourism village.”

In response to this recognition, Chief Minister Pema Khandu extended his congratulations to the residents of Silluk, remarking, “Congratulations to Silluk Village in East Siang for being included in the NCERT Class 3 EVS textbook! Featured in the chapter ‘Taking Charge of Waste’, Silluk has become a national example of zero-waste living and grassroots cleanliness…”

He further emphasized that the transformation from scattered waste to clean streets and green pathways exemplifies true community spirit. “Now, students across India will learn from Silluk’s inspiring journey — a powerful message that change starts at home,” he added.

Mebo MLA Oken Tayeng also expressed his heartfelt congratulations to the people of Silluk for this national acknowledgment. “This achievement is not just a local success — it’s a proud milestone for all of Arunachal Pradesh,” he stated, attributing the transformation to the villagers’ dedication and the leadership of SSA.
