Silchar, Sept 3: The State Election Commission has revealed the timeline for the upcoming Silchar Municipal Corporation elections. Voting is set for October 3, with vote counting scheduled for October 6.
Following the announcement on Wednesday, the model code of conduct has been activated, creating a wave of anticipation across the 42 wards. Political factions are now intensifying their strategies, and potential candidates are busy preparing their nomination documents.
Voting will take place at 316 polling stations from 7:30 AM to 4 PM. The counting process will commence at 8 AM on October 6 and will continue until all votes are counted. If necessary, a repoll will occur on October 5.
This election represents a significant chapter in Silchar's civic history, which spans 144 years. The town, which started with just four wards under a basic station committee in 1882, was officially designated as a municipal corporation on June 30, 2025.
According to the State Election Commission's announcement, candidates can submit their nominations until September 11. The scrutiny and publication of valid nominations will take place on September 14, and candidates have until September 17 to withdraw their nominations, after which the final list of candidates will be released.
In a conversation with local media, Cachar District Commissioner Rahul Kumar Gupta stated that all necessary arrangements for the municipal elections have been organized, and officials are mobilized following the announcement of the election dates. “We are committed to ensuring that the Silchar Municipal Corporation elections are conducted smoothly and fairly,” he noted, adding that the vote counting will occur at the ISTT campus.
As per the final electoral rolls published on July 15, the corporation has a total of 270,772 registered voters, comprising 129,877 men, 140,884 women, and 11 individuals categorized as 'other.'
As the electoral activities ramp up across the city's wards, the public's expectations will be centered on the restoration of effective civic governance and the new corporation's capability to meet the growing demands of Silchar's rapidly developing community.
