Silchar-Agartala Express Upgraded to Modern Coaches for Enhanced Travel Experience
New Year Brings Upgraded Train Services
Silchar, Jan 1: The year 2026 commenced positively for rail travelers in the Barak Valley as the Silchar–Agartala–Silchar Express (Train Nos. 15664/15663) transitioned to modern LHB (Linke Hofmann Busch) coaches. This upgrade from the previous conventional ICF coaches took effect on Wednesday.
The formal inauguration of the upgraded service took place at Silchar Railway Station, attended by notable figures including Rajya Sabha MP Kanad Purkayastha, Silchar MP Parimal Suklabaidya, Silchar MLA Dipayan Chakraborty, and Cachar BJP leaders Rupam Saha and Abhrajit Chakraborty, along with senior railway officials.
MP Kanad Purkayastha characterized this development as a “promising start to the New Year,” emphasizing that the shift to LHB coaches would greatly improve passenger safety, comfort, and onboard facilities.
He also mentioned that after the recent upgrade of the Silchar–Kanchanjungha Express to LHB coaches, the Rangiya–Silchar Express is expected to follow suit next month.
Purkayastha expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw for addressing the long-standing issues related to outdated rolling stock. He urged passengers to assist in maintaining the new facilities.
Additionally, the Rajya Sabha MP noted that there are plans to introduce Vande Bharat services to Silchar, although current space limitations at the station present challenges. Alternative sites, such as the Netaji Nagar area, are being considered for a new station, especially with future railway projects like the proposed Lanka–Moinarbond line in mind.
Silchar MP Parimal Suklabaidya also expressed his support for the upgrade, indicating optimism for further enhancements in railway infrastructure for southern Assam.
