Significant Update for Agniveers: Two-Year Extension After Four-Year Service
Government's New Decision on Agnipath Scheme
In a pivotal move, the central government has amended the Agnipath scheme, receiving approval from the Union Cabinet. This modification introduces a significant change regarding the tenure of Agniveers, allowing those who complete four years of initial service to receive an additional two-year service period. Under the existing regulations, 25% of Agniveers are directly inducted into the Indian Armed Forces as regular soldiers, while the remaining 75% will now be granted this new two-year extension. This initiative provides a valuable opportunity for dedicated Agniveers to continue serving the nation, especially for those who were not selected as regular soldiers initially. Furthermore, there are provisions for these soldiers to be fully regularized after this two-year period.
Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General N.S. Raja Subramani provided detailed insights into this crucial decision, stating that all Agniveers completing their four-year tenure will have the chance to become regular soldiers. This will be based on their personal interest and a fully transparent selection process. Notably, the first batch of Agniveers is completing their service this month, making this announcement particularly significant for the future of the youth. The CDS clarified that after regularizing 25% of the soldiers, the remaining 75% will have the option of an additional two years of service, allowing them to further enhance their military experience.
After the completion of this two-year extension, a thorough evaluation of all Agniveers' performance will be conducted. This assessment will focus on their efficiency, achievements during service, and the immediate needs of the military organization. Soldiers who meet the established standards and demonstrate positive performance will be considered for permanent inclusion in regular service. General Subramani emphasized that this entire selection process will take into account the soldiers' preferences, as well as the country's defense requirements and organizational priorities, adhering to objective criteria.
Throughout their service, various critical aspects such as physical fitness, motivation, morale, discipline, and technical skills of Agniveers are regularly assessed. The primary aim of this additional two-year service period is to provide youth with the opportunity to further develop their professional capabilities and military experience, ensuring that the Indian Armed Forces benefit from a long-term pool of trained and experienced personnel. Additionally, during this extended service period, Agniveers will receive improved pay scales and enhanced service benefits, providing them with greater financial stability for their extended tenure.
The CDS highlighted that this provision for an additional service period will allow the army to benefit from the training and discipline acquired by Agniveers for a longer duration. The extra time following four years of rigorous military training and various responsibilities will further solidify their practical knowledge. This government decision strikes an excellent balance between the operational needs of the organization and the career aspirations of the youth, offering Agniveers a solid opportunity to contribute to national service for an extended period.
