Discovery of Critical Minerals in Goalpara

Deposits of critical minerals discovered in the Tukreswari Hills & Sijukona Hills of Goalpara district

Goalpara, May 23: The Geological Survey of India (GSI) has announced the discovery of critical mineral deposits in the Tukreswari and Sijukona Hills located in the Goalpara district. This finding is expected to have significant economic and strategic implications for both Assam and the nation.

Among the minerals identified are lithium, graphite, cobalt, and vanadium, all of which are vital for the production of electric vehicles, batteries, mobile devices, laptops, advanced defense systems, missiles, and technologies for space exploration.

This discovery has sparked enthusiasm among the local community, especially near the Tukreswari Temple.

One local expressed, "The Tukreswari Temple has a history of around 350 years, and we never anticipated such positive news for our region. This could pave the way for India to achieve self-sufficiency, reducing reliance on imports. If substantial quantities of these minerals are found, India might even emerge as an exporter."

The exploration is part of the National Critical Mineral Mission initiated by the Centre, which commenced in 2024–25 and is set to continue until 2030–31, with a budget of approximately Rs 16,300 crore.

Additionally, agreements for the commercial development of mineral deposits in Goalpara, with concentrations ranging from 1,000 to 5,000 PPM, were established during the Advantage Assam 2.0 event with various national and international firms.

Residents are optimistic that this development will lead to job creation, stimulate business activities, and enhance the local economy.

Another local remarked, "This initiative will not only benefit the nation but also the people in our area. It has the potential to create jobs, foster business growth, and alleviate unemployment in the district. We are hopeful for the future."

Currently, India, along with several other nations, relies heavily on China for the supply and processing of critical rare earth minerals.
