Significant Developments in 2016 Custodial Death Case: Six Retired Officers Arrested

Arrests Made in Custodial Death Case

In a notable turn of events regarding the 2016 custodial death case, authorities apprehended six retired police personnel on Tuesday in connection with the death of an individual inside a police station lock-up in Narasinghpur, Cuttack district.

The arrested individuals include retired ASI Bhagwan Sahu, constable Pramod Kumar Patra, and four retired home guards: Joginath Nayak, Bhikhari Nayak, Bhramar Rana, and Maheshwar Devta. All six were presented before the court, where their bail applications were denied, leading to their placement in judicial custody.

Brutality Against Inmate

This case dates back to 2016 when Saroj Senapati was brought to the police station following a complaint lodged by his wife, Alka Nayak, concerning a domestic dispute. During the interrogation, it is alleged that the police officers brutally assaulted him. Subsequently, Saroj Senapati died under suspicious circumstances while in police custody, raising serious allegations against the police.

The incident sparked widespread concern and raised questions about violence in custody. Following this, a case (No. 130/2016) was registered under various sections of the IPC, including 448, 342, 341, 323, 506, 302, and 34, prompting an investigation.

Accountability Ensured with Arrests

Based on the investigation's findings, multiple charges were filed under various IPC sections, including wrongful confinement, assault, criminal intimidation, and murder. Taking the matter seriously, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) initiated a case and commenced a detailed inquiry into the incident.

Officials indicated that these arrests mark a significant step towards ensuring accountability in this long-pending case. As the investigation progresses, further legal actions are anticipated.
